There was once  an old beggar called “Horse Face” who lived near a temple in eastern Tibet. He  was so ugly no woman wanted to spend a single night with him - even if they  were paid. His main preoccupation seemed picking fleas off dogs and beggars who  were wandering the streets. Since it was  judged he had no aptitude for study and practice, he was expelled from the  monastery. Nonetheless, living a poor and simple life alone, he continued his  practices and daily prayers.

One year, a  devastating plague of black insects struck the entire area. The monks and  clairvoyants within the temple provided helpless against it. Horse-Facepracticed tonglen (exchange meditation) and performed some complex and  cumbersome rituals to banish the pestilence. A short time after, he fell ill.Rumors circulated it was because he had taken in all the bad karma in the area.Since the number of infectious insects fell rapidly, the diseases they  generated also subsided. A little later Horse Face died alone in his derelict  shack. In return for his selfless action, the  people held a ritual cremation in  his  honor.

Meanwhile, when  Horse Face reached Glorious Copper-Colored  Mountain, Padmasambhava greeted him and then asked him, “How many sentient  beings have been liberated since I dispatched you to Tibet?”

Horse Face opened his hands showing thousands and thousands of living insects  and seeing them, all the compassionate Buddhas  rejoiced.

东藏一座寺院附近住着一位年老的乞丐喇嘛，绰号“马脸”。他长得实在太不出色，就算花钱也无法诱使任何女人到他的帐篷过一夜。他主要的工作似乎是帮癞皮狗和游荡的乞丐们温柔地捉虱除蚤。

他被寺院僧众逐出，似乎连研读和修习的能力也没有。离群索居，过着贫穷单纯的生活，他盘腿端坐在火堆前继续灵修，并唱诵日修祈祷文。

有一年，突然出现一场显然与黑虫有关的瘟疫，袭卷了整个地区。寺院里的高僧或有神通的人都无能为力。马脸修了“自他交换法”，并做了些复杂繁琐的仪轨来驱除邪恶的疾疫，之后，就听说他生病了。谣传说他已神奇地担当起全地区的恶业，因为害虫的数量迅速减少，疾疫也平息了。

当马脸孤单地在那荒废破败的小屋中死后，人们为他举行火葬，作为他“无我”行为的回报。

在同时，马脸来到庄严的铜色山，莲花生大士正张开双手迎接他。

莲花生大士问他：“自从我遣你到西藏，你带领了多少的众生获得解脱？”

马脸摊开双手，展现出千万只数不清的活虫子。所有慈悲的佛与菩萨都为他欢喜。
